Welcome to Phuket Muay Thai
Camp and Gym Bungalows!
The bungalows are located on a
quiet hill, between Kata and
Chalong. The area is cool and shady
and rarely hot, so some bungalows
are equipped with fans and designed
to take advantage of the breeze.
At The Phuket Muay Thai Gym we encourage all of our students to attend live fights.
This gives them an opportunity to watch, learn and talk to fighters in the locker room or even on the way to the ring. The Phuket Muay Thai instructors will give you valuable hints and comments during the fight or during the break. In Phuket we will sponsor visits to the Sappan Hin stadium, Bangla stadium in Patong, Nanai stadium in Patong and Ko Samui's brand new WMC Petch Buncha Stadium
Nothing is as exciting as the roar of the crowd and the Muay Thai music, when the fighters perform the "Wai Khru" and then the fight starts. Bouts are 5 three minute rounds with a 2 minute break between each round. Winners are determined by either KO or by points if the fight lasts all 5 rounds. Points are given for knock downs, take downs, blows (knee blows to the kidneys during clinch are highly rated) and execution of kicks. In Thailand kicks are more valued than punches .Typically fighters who kick more than their opponents pile up more points.

WMC Ukraine, Kiev Super show:
King Cup Bangkok Thailand:
THE biggest event in Muay Thai undoubtly is the annual King Cup in honor of His Majesty the King of Thailand. Expect 400,000 plus people at the Sanam Luang, Bangkok to turn out to see this special event. Typically only the best of the best qualify, but every year PMT gets a chance to nominate a few fighters. PMT has NEVER lost a King Cup fight, which is a reflection of our trainers and philosophy, quality, safety and endurance, which are key to Muay Thai.
See below a slide show of King Cup 2006, featuring 2 days of Muay Thai, 15hrs per day. Sponsors were MTG-Pro USA, Phuket Muay Thai, Regency and M150. Thailand's Super promoter Khun Songchai and the World Muay Thai Council as sanctioning bodies put on this fantastic show:
Our 2 winners in the 2006 King up were:
Phuket Muay Thai Manat Yingwitthayakun
Manat fought the previous year King Cup fighter from Iran, Amir. Despite his smaller size the bout was
a no contest after round 2, Manat was just too fast with his low kicks and front kicks and left Amir wonder what he had to do to get into range. Manat won on points, but is was an exciting bout as both fighters gave it their best in front of 400,000 Muay Thai fans:
King Cup 2006 Winner:
Phuket Muay Thai Manat Yingwitthayakun
King Cup 2006 Winner:
Phuket Muay Thai Yunui Kittiporn (Dam)
Dam fought Sean Wright, (who eventually starred in Contender Asia) for the Intercontinental WMC Title, but with over 130 fights Dam was just to powerful from round 1, in round 2 the Sean started to box and thus played right into Dam's strength Body shots could be heard as far as the announcement both, the crown screaming Dam, Dam and things were pretty much over in round 3 as Sean did not look like he was going to answer the bell. To both fighters credit and as true gentlemen the last 2 rounds were fought hard, but fair, as both fighters knew the final outcome.
Because of our excellent relationship with Stadium promoters and the Phuket and Thailand boxing
community as well as in Ko Samui, Chiang Mai and Bangkok, we can set-up fights in virtually EVERY stadium in Thailand for experienced customers of our Gym. Many of these fights are televised on National TV (Ch 7 and 11), ESPN/FOX Sports, KTV Japan and Korea . Starting with the 2007King Cup fights will be transmitted LIVE to over 60 countries. This is a great opportunity for up and coming fighters to get INTERNATIONAL exposure.
NEW FIGHTER RULES !
Qualification and Procedures
In order to comply with the Thai Sports Authority, Thai Law and WMC/IFMA regulations every fighter needs the following :
1. Minimum 4 weeks conditioning and sparring with our crew
2. Camp Director Approval in writing and stamped with company seal
3. 2-3 weeks notice for International fights, 1 week local events
4. Boxing License (provided free by Camp and Stadium)
5. Insurance (provided free by Camp via Boxing License)
The Camp Director ONLY has the authority to provide proper fights, documentation, insurance and registration with WMC/IFMA. We also arrange flights, visas, accommodations and fighter payments (varies by country and experience). Once you have written approval, all other items will be provided at our expense, including tapes or DVD's if the fight is televised.
Any fights not scheduled through the camp and properly approved can result in camp expulsion, fighter ban in all stadiums or worse, NON-COVERED medical expenses and unnecessary legal problems. Thai law and International laws are to protect fighters from being exploited, under paid and lack of insurance. Follow the law please.
Unlike other gyms, we strongly believe in quality, not quantity and will not support fights that we feel are not winnable and backed by a full training schedule. Safety is our number 1 priority. A poorly conditioned fighter will take an unnecessary beating and unlike boxing or K1 rules, in pure Muay Thai nearly any strike to any part of the body is allowed. Even in the event of a "foul" strike, rarely are Thai fighters given any time to recover and are expected to fight on. Also fighters who don't kick or punch at a sufficient rate (as per the referee) are warned and then disqualified. THERE IS NO MERCY IN THE RING. BE PREPARED !
NEW FIGHTER RULES !
A few great examples:
-
Matt Sulya, 175 lbs USA, getting ready at the Phuket Muay Thai Camp. At this point in time it was 3 weeks to show time and his first fight after only 7 weeks of training. Matt, who came in great shape had lost 2-3 more inches on the waist and 4 lb's overall. You can see the difference between the picture on the left after 4 weeks training and on the right after 6 weeks training. One of the key differences was that after the workout Matt went to eat and study in his room, the rest of the camp went to Patong, to check out the nightlife. When you train serious Muay Thai, that is the key choice: Sleep and train or sort of train and party.
Mat Sulya, USA at 185 lbs against Marek, Turkey 185 lbs with some boxing experience .This was Matt's first Muay Thai fight. The TV show which was done under the World Muay Thai Counsel (WMC) rules and umbrella and what a show it was. Stephan Fox, K. Songchai (#1 Promoter in Thailand, Rachadamern Stadium), the Major of Ko Samui, Thailand's Sports Governor and the Privy to Her Majesty the King of Thailand were present.
The show started with a Muay Boran exhibition by kids, a statement of Muay Thai against Drugs and a true display of an International Muay Thai Talent with both Top rated Thai and Foreign fighters, 2 WMC belts were on the line and Stephan as well as Clifton Brown (who incidentally won one of the belts) did their expert fight commentary .Folks, it does not get better than this. The Ko Samui stadium was packed and sold out and the crowd was fired up.
Each fighter presenting their flag and home country, Matt wrapped in the US flag, Clifton Brown Canadian flag and Alex Dally Scottish flag.
A game Alex Dally fighting one of Thailand's best, 4 rounds of of non-stop action but the powerful kicks of the Thai fighter were just too much for Alex who is still recovering from a broken arm and was unable to block the crushing roundhouse kicks to his ribcage.
Sealing the corners and praying to the Muay Thai spirits, pre-fight ritual well done.
A well executed Wai Khru pre-fight ritual and dance to thank his teachers and intimidate the opponent.
Phuket Muay Thai Gym-Fight
Round 1 and 2 in the clinch and both opponents connecting with crushing elbows. In R2 Matt was put down to the canvass by a right because he was carrying his hands low and (understandably for the first fight) forgot all blocking techniques.
In R4 the referee stopped the fight because the Turkish fighter could not longer continue. Both fighters had exchanged elbows to the head with Matt connecting to the side of the head with a punch that was audible in the stances. Again, superior conditioning won over technique and experience. If this would have gone to 5 Rounds, it would have been anybody's guess.
Eugene bangs one out at Bangla
Meanwhile in Phuket Eugene gets a KO in R5, after getting rocked by a crushing right in the first. He than systematically destroyed a much more experienced Thai fighter for the 72kg Bangla Stadium belt.
Sompong wins in R2 KO
On the same card Sompong made short work out of his opponent and dropped him him with a series of front kicks (Tip) in R2
MUAYTHAI Goes MAD in Singapore
3 Phuket Muay Thai Fighters had the prestige and honor to be invited to this WMC/IFMA sanctioned Muay Thai against drugs event. THe place was packed, the fighters were prepared and the event was well organized from arrival to Singapore in a 4 star hotel, all the way to return 3 days later:
Phuket Muay THai Fighters : Eugene, Sompong "Bruce" and Patipan
Eugene Plessey (South Africa-Phuket Muay Thai) VS Zach (Singaporean IFMA Bronze Medal-Winner).
It was an exciting 5-round-battle; both boxers showed real outstanding Muay thai skills keeping the crowd on their feet. Zach won a point decision, and a rematch became the topic of the night. Zach, who is already qualified to enter the IFMA World Championships, is also the hope of the country. He also fractured 2 bones and bruised rips and came to meet Eugene later to have him take the trophy, a true display of Muay Thai respect and tradition.
Patipan (Thailand-Phuket Muay Thai) VS Steven Ong (Singapore)
This bout was one of the highlight shows of the evening. Steven, 18-year-old boxer, took the challenge against the much more experienced 15 year old Thai fighter and fought the fight of his life. Although Steve lost a point decision, the audience gave him a standing ovation for his grand performance.
Sizzling Singapore MAD Campaign 2005
Sompong (Thailand-Phuket Muay Thai) VS Aphidet (Singaporean resident Thai fighter)
Both boys, debuting in their first Pro fight in Singapore , started the fight slow and steady testing each other out for the first 2 rounds. The pace picked up dramatically in the 3 rd with Steve landing some strong leg kicks and punches on the Singapore boy. Ridzwan fought back with some nifty punch kick combinations. Both fighters kept their work rates up for the last 3 rounds and eventually the fight was scored a draw by the judges.
